Tributes have flowed for former Leichhardt mayor Kristine Cruden who passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the news of Ms Cruden's passing was "very sad" and paid tribute to the "compassionate, smart, funny and amazing woman".
"Kris made an enormous difference to many through her activism and life was that much better for all who had the privilege of knowing Kris - much loved by her family, comrades and friends," he said.
Ms Cruden, a Rozelle local, served as Mr Albanese's chief of staff until November 2016 when she started work at the Public Service Association. She served as the mayor of the former Leichhardt Council between 1996 and 1999.
"Kris was such a great friend and mentor to me and it's very painful to know she is gone," said Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne.
"She was a leader of great standing in the trade union movement and the Labor Party and an excellent human being. She was a determined feminist and a fierce campaigner for social justice."
A memorial service for Ms Cruden will be held at Balmain Town Hall on Monday 27th June 2022, at 11am. Her family ask that you consider a donation to the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, Camperdown.
